Just moved into a Boise home, or lost a key? You usually have two choices: rekey the locks you have, or replace the hardware. Here is how to pick.
What rekeying does
Rekeying changes the internal pins so old keys stop working while you keep your existing locks. It is the fast, budget-friendly choice after a move, and it puts every door on one key.
When to replace instead
Replace the lock when it is worn, damaged, or you want an upgrade, a keypad deadbolt, a smart lock, or higher-security hardware.
Rekey vs. replace at a glance
- Rekey: keep hardware, new keys, lowest cost
- Replace: new hardware, upgrade option, higher cost
- Both: secure a new home, stop old keys from working
